Dos and Don’ts of Being Arrested

The notion of finding yourself incarcerated for whatever reason can be horrifying to most, and when we find ourselves in this situation we tend to act irrationally out of fear. Many find being locked behind bars or having to contact a bail bondsman to be an embarrassing situation but there are a few key pieces of advice that might just make it easier for you to get out of this tough situation easily.
Have a few contacts ready
When you are incarcerated the bail bondsman will need to arrange your release which can be difficult without being able to contact your friend or a relative to serve as a co-signer, which can be anyone who you are confident in and who is ready to vouch for you. That’s why it is important to have a few phone numbers of people you know and trust memorized or penned down, so that a bail bondsman can easily get in contact with them and secure your fast and easy release.
Do not share arrest details over the phone
Whenever you use your right to a phone call while in custody remember that every call you make will be recorded and can be used against you. That’s why it is of utmost importance not to share any details connected to the case while you are talking to your family, girlfriend, spouse or a bail bondsman. All you need to share is the time of your arrest, the offense you were incarcerated for, your current location and how much it would cost to get you out. Whether or not you are innocent, pay close attention to all the information you share so that it doesn’t turn into a disadvantage for your case.
Do not open up to other inmates
Finding yourself behind bars is a stressful situation, and while you might be tempted to share your story with an inmate, we would strongly advise against it. While it is always easier to confess to a stranger, we strongly recommend you keep the details of your case for someone you trust or a bail bondsman as this is neither the right time nor place to be forming new friendships. As you don’t know the person you are talking to very well, if you “spill the beans” you can’t be sure that they won’t use any information you’ve given them against you in order to make it easier on themselves and strike a deal to reduce their prison sentence.
